Lot of 13. (12 photos, 11 of which are postcards, and one cabinet card) Six postcards and one cabinet card are bell-ringers. Two show men delivering large bells, one to a church, the other is marked across the yoke "Steel alloy church bell." One shows a man ringing a much smaller "dinner bell" or "farm bell." The others, including the cabinet photo, are people playing handbells. One of these is signed (illeg.) on recto and has "Cafe Roland" written on it. The back is used (in German). Another has five men with a table cover reading "Royal United Campanologists" (those who study bells). Cabinet photo with Vanderbilt, Liverpool backmark. One postcard shows two men behind bottles of various sizes (tuned?). Next to the bottle table is a canister (?) with "B♯ don't Bb." [Be sharp, don't be flat]. Verso with manuscript "St. Joseph's College Rensselaer, Indiana 1912." Five cards show horns. One small (2.25 x 3.25 in.) image is a man blowing a horn. One postcard is marked "Beaune. - Universite Americaine A.E. F. University Megaphone." The horn may be large enough for two men to sit in. One shows young men using a megaphone in what appears to be a stadium. Another shows a soldier blowing a trumpet into a large megaphone. On verso is manuscript: "Blowing first call for the soldiers to get out of bed at 6 oclock in winter mornings and 4:45 in the summer." The last is labeled in negative "The Fog Horn. Flat Holm" showing dual large horns on top of a blocky building. Flat Holm is an island in the Bristol Channel between Wales and England, and is considered to be part of the former. Provenance: Steve Roden Collection: Music in Vernacular Photographs Condition: Most very good. Just a couple with scuffed edges or missing corners.
