Paris: Par Autorisation du Roi, 1823-27 (the atlas 1823, the text volumes 1826-27). The uncut text volumes 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches (22 x 14 cm), the trimmed volumes slightly smaller. The atlas 21 7/8 x 14 inches (55.5 x 35.5 cm); Atlas with 147 (of 150, lacks plate 15, 74 and 74 in the second part) engraved or lithographed plates and maps, several hand-colored; the text volumes with half-titles and 15 plates in the text (uncolored). Some wear and small losses to wrappers, minor spotting and a worm hole to the first volume affecting the wrapper, the autograph letter and the lower margin of the first text leaves, the two text volumes in modern wrappers with foxing and with French library and discard stamps to titles (these likely from another set), the atlas with a dark stain to the upper margin affecting preliminary leaves and upper extremity of the first plates, other foxing, thumbsoiling and small stains throughout mostly affecting the plate extremities, the early boards worn. This copy is inscribed by Cailliaud on the wrapper of the first text volume "A Monsieur Beliote" and contains a tipped in letter dated 1851 from Cailliaud to Beliote mentioning his second voyage to Egypt and commenting on aspects of the work. Cailliaud's second voyage to Egypt took place between 1819 and 1822 and is best known for his exploration of the ancient city of Meroe in Nubia, famous for its hundreds of pyramids. Blackmer 270; Gay 2572; Hilmy I, p.113. C
