In 1827 Capé succeed his father-in-law as a porter at the Louvre, where he also worked as a binder in the library. He soon found himself binding books for a distinguished clientèle. In 1848 he left the Louvre and established himself at 16, rue Dauphine. The catalogue of Capé's library is preceded by his biography by Jules Janin.
