Beschreibung:

Capella, Galeazzo Flavio L'anthropologia di Galeazzo Capella secretario dell'illustrissimo signor duca di Milano. Venice: heirs of Aldo Manuzio & heirs of Andrea Torresano, January 1533
Printed on vellum. The first edition of Capella’s treatise on the nature of humankind. One of the earliest uses of the term "anthropology", this tripartite work presents an "entangled philosophical as well as anatomical and physiological inquiry of humankind" (Santing).
"Although beautiful, printing on vellum is both costly and difficult, and the existence of vellum copies of Aldine imprints proves that there was demand for special copies in the early years of the Press. Vellum-printed copies would be run off typically after the paper copies had been completed, when the inked type had ‘cured’ through extended use in finishing the run of copies on paper, and the pressmen could be assured of a clean impression" (G. Scott Clemons & H. George Fletcher, Aldus Manutius A legacy more lasting than bronze, 33).
8vo (163 x 95 mm). Italic type, 30 lines, printed on vellum. collation: A-I8 K4: 76 leaves. Three 5-line initials with later decoration and illumination, two roundels (with Grolier's arms and motto) added to foot of first leaf in early twentieth century. (Browning to several leaves in the first gathering.)
binding: Contemporary Italian olive mottled morocco (169 x 103 mm), paneled in gilt and blind, each side with gilt knotwork centerpiece, all edges gilt; blue morocco-edged folding case. (Rebacked preserving most of the original spine, other small repairs.)
acquisition: Purchased from Libreria Antiquaria Mediolanum, Milan, 2011. references: UCLA 257; Cataldi Palau 121; Edit16 9089; Renouard 110/10, Van Praet, Vélins... Bibliothèques publiques II, Belles-lettres 29
