The First Voyage -- in which Cook masterfully charted the Society Islands, Australia and New Zealand, adding more than 5,000 miles of coastline to Admiralty charts -- is here in the preferred second edition (early issues of the first edition did not contain the large chart of the Straits of Magellan and all were without Hawkesworth's reply to Alexander Dalrymple). The first edition of the Third Voyage was so popular that the entire issue was sold out on the third day of publication. Kippis's Life , the first English and the first comprehensive biography of Cook, includes a re-printing of David Samwell' eye-witness narrative of Cook's death, first published 1786 and the rarest of all eighteenth-century publications relating to Captain Cook, written by the surgeon's mate aboard the Resolution (and later surgeon aboard the Discovery ).
