The first edition of the Third Voyage was so popular that the entire issue was sold out on the third day of publication. Kippis's Life , the first English and the first comprehensive biography of Cook, includes a re-printing of David Samwell' eye-witness narrative of Cook's death, first published 1786 and the rarest of all eighteenth-century publications relating to Captain Cook, written by the surgeon's mate aboard the Resolution (and later surgeon aboard the Discovery ).
