CARAVIA, Alessandro (1503-1568). Il sogno dil Caravia . Venice: Giovann'Antonio di Nicolini da Sabbio, May 1541. 4° (200 x 144mm). Large woodcut on title-page and 5 other illustrations in the text. (Title-page, quire F and the last leaf lightly browned.) Brown morocco by Duru, gilt olive wreath on sides, gilt turn-ins, g.e. Provenance : Henry Huth (small gilt oval bookplate). FIRST EDITION of this strange poem by the Venetian merchant, Alessandro Caravia who also wrote in Venetian dialect. The above poem relates the dream that the author had of his eighty-six year old friend, Giovanni Paolo di Leopardi, returning to visit him after his death. The old man was convinced that he would be granted immediate entry into Paradise and the shock that he felt when he is escorted to Beelzebub's kingdom is vividly conveyed. The work was regarded by the ecclesiastical authorities as hostile to the teachings of the church and was rigorously suppressed. Sander 1713 and plate 393.
