Title: Carte pour Servir au Voyage des Capes. Lewis et Clarke, a l'Ocean Pacifique Author: Tardieu, J.B. Place: Paris Publisher: Date: 1810 Description: Copper-engraved map. 24x19 cm. (9½x7½"). Rare map from the first French edition of Patrick Gass's Journal of the Lewis & Clark expedition, which was the first publication in foreign language of any detailed information of the Lewis and Clark expedition. The map itself seems to be the first one published that mentions Lewis and Clark and locates parts of their route. Wheat notes that "Tardieu had no Lewis and Clark map to assist him, but he apparently had at hand Meriwether Lewis's brief letter-report to Jefferson, and he did his best to locate on his map at least a few of the Expedition's points of geographic interest. His available topography, based as it was on Soulard, was both skimpy and erroneous, but his use of the quoted legends showed much ingenuity." Lot Amendments Condition: Mild offsetting and soiling, 1½" tear into right edge with verso archival tape repair and residue from earlier non-archival repair, affecting the neat lines, right margin trimmed close, old folds; about very good. Item number: 216610
