CARTER, JAMES E. President . Autograph letter signed ("Jimmy C.") AS PRESIDENT, to Mr. Benson, Washington, D.C., 2 July 1980. 1 page, 8vo, White House stationery, tipped to an unframed mat, with original envelope . A RARE AUTOGRAPH LETTER IN OFFICE: "KEEPING OUR NATION AT PEACE...WILL INDEED BE A CHALLENGE TO US ALL" In the throes of the Iran hostage crisis and his unsuccessful 1980 presidential campaign, President Carter pens a handwritten letter: "Mr. Kirbo sent me your note. Thank you for the good advice and offer of support. Keeping our nation at peace, strong & united will indeed be a challenge to us all, & the campaign will be a good forum for debating these issues..." Handwritten letters of President Carter while in office are rare; very few contain significant content and most are signed "Jimmy," or "Jimmy C.," as is this example (cf. John M. Taylor, From the White House Inkwell: American Presidential Autographs , 1989, p. 223-225). The best-known Carter autograph letter signed of Presidential date, to his brother Billy Carter, signed "Jimmy," was sold at Christie's on 16 October 1996, lot 9, $29,900.
