Egyptian President Muhammad Anwar al Sadat's historic visit to Jerusalem in November 1977 initiated the Middle East peace process that was concluded with the Camp David Accords in March 1979. President Carter invited Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin to Camp David on September 5, 1978 to open formal talks. Thirteen days of intense negotiations at Camp David resulted in the Framework for Peace in the Middle East and a Framework for the Conclusion of a Peacy Treaty between Egypt and Israel. Despite later roadblocks relating to Palestinian autonomy, the formal peace agreements were signed and ended the 31-year state of war between Egypt and Israel. Carter, who witnessed the agreements, was highly instrumental in bringing about this important resolution, as evidenced in Sadat's inscription, "Jimmy... You have done it."
