Philadaelphia: J.B. Lippincott & Co., [1853-]1856. 8vo (267x178 mm). 50 hand-colored lithographic plates, some after Geo. G. White, drawn on stone by William E. Hitchcock, printed and colored by J.T. Bowen of Philadelphia. Original brown cloth, title in gilt on spine. Condition : some browning to text, some light browning to blank margins of plates; rebacked, old spine laid down. Provenance : Peabody Institute, Danvers, Institute Library (early ink stamp). first edition . An important American color-plate and ornithological work which Cassin intended to be a supplement to Audubon. Cassin’s work took American ornithology to a new level, becoming the first American bird book to use trinomial nomenclature.
