CATALOGUES -- A Collection of 10 catalogues, mainly on light fittings, chandeliers, mirrors and architectural metalwork and glass, from the reference library of the Birmingham Company F & C Osler, including catalogues from E. Douillet, Georges Vilbert, W.T. Allen & Co., M. Rossell & Co, Val d'Osue, Saunier Duval & Co., Ellis & Greenburg, most catalogues from c. 1900, numerous plates, some half-tone (most plates detached, some tears), mostly in contemporary cloth (worn). The Birmingham based company F & C Osler was a manufacturer of great prominence in the 19th century. Founded by Thomas Osler in 1807, his two sons Follett and Clarkson gained notoriety by creating spectacular crystal chandeliers, fountains and furniture, much of it for the Indian sub continent. Nevertheless, they also had admirers here in England. In 1850, Osler were commissioned to make the giant crystal fountain for the 1851 Great Exhibition in Hyde Park. With the introduction of the electric light bulb in the 1880's, Osler was able to create interesting new designs with the lamps and shades pointing downwards, emphasising this remarkable new method of lighting. In 1924 F & C Osler joined forces with Faraday & Son Ltd. (10)
