Beschreibung:

Catechismus, Ex decreto Concili Tridentini, ad parochos, Pii qvinti pont. max. iuss editi. Romae (apud Paulum Manutium) 1566. Folio (326x221 mm.). (4), (1)-359, (1 blank), (12, last blank) pp. Title with large woodcut (arms of Rome), a few woodcut initials. Later (17th century) brown full calf, somewhat worn, nice marbled inner doublures, gilt edges of covers, richly gilt spine in 7 compartments, some worming, some damages at head and foot, all edges gilt. 1 page with small loss of paper in one corner. Some foxing and browning, about 20 leaves harder, some minor dampstaining. Title with partly erased annotation. Photo. First edition of the new catechism published by ordinance and edict promulgated by the Council of Trent. About twenty editions were published later on by the same press. The large criblé initial E, copied from Robert Estienne's Paris set, is attributed to Geoffroy Tory. Small Aldine device within an architectural border with figures on title page, one small and one large foliated initial on criblé ground. The original program for the press that became the Tipografia del Popolo Romano was the printing of the texts under ecclesiastical authority, particularly the material newly formulated by the Council of Trent (see Barbieri, "Paolo Manuzio e la Stamperia del Popolo Romano [1561-1570]", Roma, 1942, pp. 149-151).
