The rare second part of the first complete edition of Don Quixote, preserved in a contemporary binding. A reprint of the Valencian second edition of 1616, fifth edition overall. We are unable to trace another copy of this second part in a contemporary binding at auction. The first part originally appeared in 1605 and the second in 1615, but they were not published together in the same city in the same year until this Barcelona edition in 1617. They were, however, produced by different printers and it is unusual in practice to find both parts united. RareBookHub lists only a single record of both parts at auction together, and just one record of the second part by itself. Palau 51989; Ricardo Hérédia, n°2518.
Octavo (149 x 100mm). Woodcut of Don Quixote on title, woodcut initials (title just holding, closed tear into text in 2B2, trivial ink marks to fore-edge). Contemporary vellum, titled in manuscript on spine (light soiling, minor loss at foot of upper joint, vertical score to lower cover, upper hinge split but holding). Provenance: early ink inscription to rear endpaper – unidentified blue owl stamp on final text leaf.
