First published in 1605, Don Quixote gained immediate popularity in Spain for its "variety, liveliness, and gibes at the famous" (PMM). Cervantes' universal portrayal of the human condition became "one of those universal works which are read by all ages at all times" (PMM). The Ibarra edition, illustrated by artists from the Academia de San Fernando and overseen by Cervantes scholar Vincente de los Ríos, became the preferred edition in Spain when it appeared in 1780. The edition is also recognized for the specially designed type, a monument to the golden age of Spanish typography.
