The first volume was published separately in 1781, and extracts from volume one and the then unpublished second volume appeared in Gotha’s “Cahiers de lecture” with the author’s consent in 1784. Three unauthorized editions followed in 1785 and 1786. “This journal is one of the most notable of American travel accounts of the Revolutionary period not only because of Chastellux's keen observation and the directness of his narrative but also because of his acute comments on society and the character of the people in different walks of life” (Clark).
