Chaucer (Geoffrey) The Workes, edited by William Thynne, 2 parts in 1, double column, black letter, both titles within woodut architectural borders, woodcuts of the Knight and a squire, woodcut criblé initials, 15 ff. (A3&4 and 3O1-3Q1) supplied from another copy (these water-stained), lacking final blank, varying degrees of fraying to first 6 ff. with loss of headlines on A3&4 and a couple a of other letters on A3, a few a few small wormholes to first 3 ff. and a few other ff, especially in sig. 3F, rust outline of an early pair of scissors to G5v and G6r, occasional spotting and staining, antique style calf, housed in a modern red cloth drop-back box, [STC 5073; Grolier 41; Pforzheimer I, 174], folio, [Imprynted at London by [Nicholas Hill for] Thomas Petit, dwellyng in Paules churche yarde at the sygne of the Maydens heed], [c.1550]. ⁂ One of four variants of the undated third collected edition, which was published simultaneously by four London booksellers (William Bonham. Richard Kele. Thomas Petit and Robert Toye), with each variant bearing a different colophon. It is the last edition of Thynne's highly regarded version of The Workes. Thynne held a number of offices at the Court of Henry VIII, including chief clerk of the kitchen, who was in charge of all royal banquets. Provenance
