Littell (booklabel, Parke Bernet, 4 February 1945, lot 159). the first account in book form of braddock’s french and indian war defeat at the battle of monongahela on the western pennsylvania frontier. Braddock’s 1755 expedition was an attempt by the British to take the French-held Fort Duquesne in order to gain control of the Ohio valley. Among those participating in the expedition was the then twenty-three year old George Washington. Other notables who took part included Daniel Boone Charles Lee and Horatio Gates. Realizing that their fort could not withstand the British cannons, French and Indian forces launched a preemptive attack on the larger British force. The tide of battle turned when Braddock was killed. After relating details of that battle, Chauncy, pastor of the First Church in Boston, reviews the role of New England forces in the war and calls for greater military cooperation between them and those from the southern colonies. Scarce. The Siebert catalogue identified only that copy and this one as appearing at auction since 1945. This copy the first issue , with appointments misspelled on p. 8.
