Moscow: Avgust Semen, 1843. 4° (309 x 236mm). Handcoloured map and 5 plates, borders printed in green throughout. Half-title, title and foreword with gilt borders hand-coloured in red, blue and green. Original blue cloth, with elaborate borders stamped in gilt and blind, pale green coated endpapers (gilt oxidized and worn). Provenance : Grand Duke Nicolai Nikolaevich (bookplate) -- Paul M. Fekula. GRAND DUKE NIKOLAI NIKOLAEVICH'S COPY, in the original binding, with three gilt borders hand-coloured in various colours. Chertkov's excavations in 1838 of the burial mounds around Moscow made him the most famous Russian archaeologist of his time. His Opisanie drevnikh Russkikh monet of 1834 was the first scholarly description of Russian coins. Fekula 1791 (this copy); Obol'yaninov 2905.
