Letters written by the Late Right Honourable Philip Dormer Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield, to his son, Philip Stanhope, Esq; late envoy extraordinary at the court of Dresden . . . published by Mrs. Eugenia Stanhope. London: for J. Dodsley, 1774. 2 volumes, 4° (295 x 225mm). In English and French. Engraved frontispiece portrait of the author in volume I, final errata leaf at end of volume II. (Lacking half-titles, a few leaves with very light spotting or soiling.) Contemporary vellum gilt, covers with finely-tooled floral and foliate border, spines elaborately tooled in seven compartments, the two lettered compartments painted blue, marbled edges (one or two light scratches). Provenance : Kenneth K. Knight (sold Christie's 31 October 1979, lot 99). A HANDSOME COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION, with the second state of line 16, page 55, volume I ("quia" corrected to "qui").
