Chodowiecki Tarock, circa 1785, Nurenberg (?), Johann Matthias Backofen (?), 78 of 78 cards, stencil colored copper engravings. Engraved by Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki popular Prussian painter and engraver of the 18th century. Trumps are full-length figures, double-ended ornate Roman numerals, French or German titles, depicting drama scenes from Macbeth and Gil Blas, trump IX Macbeth is a figure of the English actor, Garrick, trump XV is without a title. Courts are full-length figures, French suits, full gilt edges, square corners, valet of hearts holds a shield with a large "B," valet of diamonds bears the letter "B" on its breast plate, no indices. Backs are overall small suns in blue. Size 4 1/8 in. (10.4 cm.) high, 2 3/16 in. (5.4 cm.) wide. Original paste board two-piece box with word TAROCC.
