CHOPIN, Frédéric François (1810-1849). Printed document signed ("Fréderic Chopin"), Paris, 16 May 1845. 1 page, folio, damp-staining along right-hand side affecting the ends of both signatures, slight paper loss to margins, affecting the scribal text on the right-hand side, neatly repaired. CHOPIN ASSIGNS THE BRITISH COPYRIGHTS OF THE FIRST EDITIONS OF HIS "BERCEUSE" AND THIRD PIANO SONATA An important document which concerns the first editions of two of the greatest and most important works of Chopin's maturity, the celebrated "Berceuse" in D-flat major, Op. 57 (1844), and the Third Piano Sonata in B minor, Op.58 (referred to in the document as the "2nd Grande Sonata, Op.58"). Giving the incipits of each work written in another hand, the text assigns the copyright for Great Britain and Ireland to Christian Rudolph Wessel and company (of Soho, London), agrees to the works' publication by Wessel's and acknowledges receipt of twenty pounds. A month later, Wessel published the two works in June 1845, before the Leipzig and Paris editions. A prodigy as a pianist, Chopin brought romantic piano music to unprecedented expressive heights, establishing the piano as a solo instrument free from choral or orchestral influence. His Polish nationalism is evident in his many polonaises and mazurkas, although he had settled in Paris in the 1830s and never returned to his homeland. Provenance : Anonymous owner (sale, Sotheby's London, 18 May 1995, lot 119).
