Christopher Richard Wynne Nevinson A.R.A (1889-1946)A Thames Landscape
signed 'C.R.W. NEVINSON' (lower right)
oil on canvas
61.5 x 76.8 cm. (24 1/8 x 30 1/4 in.)FootnotesProvenance
Private Collection, U.K.
Exhibited
Nottingham, Nottingham Art Gallery, Exhibition of Works by C.R.W. Nevinson, December 1929-15 February 1930, cat.no.1
A similar but smaller composition was auctioned at Sotheby's in 1985 under the title The Thames at Limehouse and was subsequently with Waterhouse and Dodd under the title The Thames at Wapping in 1990. Nevinson depicted the Thames and its environs many times, evoking the river and all its craft and at various times of day. The shimmering surface of the river recalls From Waterloo Bridge and Sun Bursting Through Fog (1924), and the barge and lone oarsman, a familiar Nevinson motif, can be seen enlarged in the Museum of London's Winter, London (1928).
We are grateful to Christopher Martin for compiling this catalogue entry.
