CHURCHILL, Sir Winston. India. Speeches and an Introduction . London: Butler & Tanner Ltd for Thornton Butterworth, Ltd, 1931. 8° (186 x 124mm). (Very light occasional spotting, small tear [?production fault] on D3.) Original printed orange wrappers (upper cover and spine a little faded). FIRST EDITION, wrappers issue. Churchill first proposed a volume on India to the publisher Thornton Butterworth on 21 March 1931; the purpose of his book would be to rally support for his campaign against the India Bill, over which he had taken a line independent of the party whip. The book was composed of seven speeches, three addresses and an introduction and was issued in both boards and wrappers on 27 May 1931, and the demand for the work prompted a second impression very shortly afterwards (also dated May 1931). Despite the power of some passages in the speeches -- 'as rhetorical exercises they are impressive [...] made when Churchill was at the height of his powers and one of the best speakers in the House of Commons' (Langworth p.148) -- the India Bill was passed through Parliament in 1935. Thus, apart from these two editions, the work was not republished during the author's lifetime. Woods Churchill (1979) A38; Langworth Churchill pp.150-151.
