CHURCHILL MAY 1941'. A WARTIME PRESENTATION COPY FROM CHURCHILL TO 'THE MAN WHO KEPT [HIM] IN GOOD VOICE FOR MANY YEARS' ( The Times obituary, 19 March 1970). C.P. Wilson F.R.C.S., C.V.O. was a distinguished Ear, Nose and Throat specialist who qualified from Middlesex Hospital in 1922 and eventually became senior E.N.T. Surgeon of that important teaching hospital. As Churchill's Ear, Nose and Throat specialist during the war years, he was responsible for keeping the war leader's voice in good trim during Britain's 'Finest Hour' when Churchill's famous broadcasts rallied the free world in the struggle against fascism. Wilson's diary records that he was first consulted by Churchill on 15th March 1941 regarding a severe and persistent cold. Wilson correctly diagnosed that the prime minister was 'allergic to snuff' -- which, according to Sir John Colville's diary (quoted in Gilbert's official biography of Churchill: VI, p1024), he had been taking in the vain hope that it would stem the cold. The two men clearly enjoyed a warm relationship, and Wilson was present in the House on 26th February 1952 when Churchill brilliantly repulsed a censure motion against the Government relating to the conduct of the war in Korea (Gilbert, VII, p707). Churchill last consulted him on 22nd February 1962. Among other honours, Wilson was a Hunterian Professor of the Royal College of Surgeons; he wrote widely on his subject. Woods A40(a). (4)
