Associated Press photo, black and white, 6 x 8in., n.d., ca. 1960, signed along left and right margins. A FINE IMAGE OF THESE TWO GREAT CONTEMPORARIES, basking in the sun of Lord Beaverbrook's villa at Cap d'Ail on the Cote d'Azur, where he and Maugham and Churchill were neighbors. Churchill's friendship with Maugham dated to before the Great War. Maugham's biographer Ted Morgan writes, "The recognized each other as survivors and were comfortable in each other's company because they were both prominent in their respective fields but never competed.
