This elegant binding could perhaps be linked to the Mendoza Binder (Andrea di Lorenzo?), who employs a very similar cornerpiece stamp and uses outer decoration around circles similar to that on the lower cover of this binding. De Marinis (La legatura artistica in Italia, I, 560) mentions another binding belonging to the Milanese Giorgio Trivulzio, also with the title in a circle and a rosette on the lower cover, assigning it to Rome.
8vo (165 x 100 mm). Italic type, 31 lines plus headline. collation: a-z8 A-D8: 216 leaves. Woodcut Aldine device on title-page and final verso (otherwise blank).
binding: Contemporary Italian tan morocco with gilt and blind-ruled panel forming squares at corners and diamonds in center of each side (167 x 100 mm), central roundel on upper cover lettered M.T.C. PHILOSOPHICA VOL II, gilt roundel on lower cover made from four rounded corner stamps surrounded by rings of tiny fleurons and clubs, tiny gilt fleurons at corners of both covers, spine with gilt and blind fillets, edges gilt and gauffered to a knotwork pattern, foot of textblock with some of gilding rubbed away and the title CIC. PHILOS. II written in ink, stubs from four pairs of ties. (Ends of spine repaired.)
