Cicero, Marcus Tullius. M. Tullii Ciceronis Orationum pars I. Corrigente Paulo Manutio. Venice: sons of Aldo Manuzio, 1550
This volume formed part of a set with the following lot.
Volume 1 only (of 3). 8vo (162 x 100 mm). Italic type, 30 lines plus headline. collation: A-Z8 AA-PP8 QQ4: 308 leaves. Woodcut Aldine device on title-page and final verso. (Some pale dampstaining, heaviest at beginning and end.)
binding: Contemporary French limp vellum (162 x 107 mm), double gilt-fillet on sides centering a gilt arabesque, traces of ties, gilt edges. (Rear cords separated, slightly cockled and dustsoiled.)
provenance: Early inscription on title-page, "P. Terrassina" — John Rutherfurd (1748-1834), of Edgerston, printed booklabel — sale, Sotheby's, Hodgson's rooms, 22-23 April 1971, lot 334 (with 4 other uniformly-bound volumes from a set of Cicero). acquisition: Purchased at preceding sale. references: UCLA 393; Edit16 12300; Renouard 148/6
