This ambitious work was produced while Cigognara was director of the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice, and designed as a sequel to the art histories of Winckelmann and Seroux d'Agincourt. While the first volume is 'sino al secolo di Napoleone' and carries a dedication to Napoleon, the title-page changed after the Emperor's fall and vols. II-III are more neutrally 'sino al secolo XIX'. Canova had been a close friend of Cicognara's from childhood, and the final volume was devoted to him and Bernini. Cicognara earned a foreign members' seat in the Instiute of France as a result of his work but the cost helped to impoverish him, and in 1824 he sold his magnificant art library to Leo XII.
