CIMINELLI, Serafino de', Aquilano (1466-1500). Opere dello elegante Poeta Seraphino Aquillano. Sonetti. Epitole. Strambotti. Egloghe. Capitol. Barzellette . Rome: Marcello Silber, 1513. 4° (188 x 133mm). Title woodcut of cupid taking aim at a poet, verses in two columns, without final blank leaf. (Some browning, washed, very small hole in title touching 2 letters.) 19th-century blue calf-backed marbled boards (spine rubbed). Poet, musician and courtier, Aquilano was one of the most popular poets of his day. Enjoying the patronage of Italian aristocracy such as Cesare Borgia and Isabella d'Este, he also created a famous allegorical spectacle in 1495 at the Sforza court in Milan. He wrote over 350 strambotti , a verse form he made his own, and over 100 sonnets. The title woodcut of a poet playing the lute is a clear reference to Aquilano's well-known muscial adaptations of Petrarch lyrics accompanied on the lute. Sander 6943; Essling 1221.
