James Alden (1810-1877): midshipman 4/1/28, passed midshipman 6/14/34, lieutenant 2/25/41, commander 9/14/55, captain 1/2/63, commodore 7/25/66, rear admiral 6/19/71, retired list 3/31/72, died 2/6/77. The advent of war found Alden in command of the USS South Carolina in which he participated in the relief of Fort Pickens. He shifted to the Gulf Squadron in charge of the stream sloop USS Richmond and was engaged during the passage of Forts Jackson and St. Philip, and in the engagement with Rebel batteries at Chalmette, Louisiana. Alden sailed with Farragut during the fleet's passage past the guns at Vicksburg and later repeated the daring movement down the Mississippi to become engaged at Port Hudson. He then took command of the steam sloop USS Brooklyn which was present for both assaults on the Confederate bastion at Fort Fisher, North Carolina. The pinnacle of Rear Admiral Alden's career came with the year-long command of the prestigious European Station in 1872. [With:] CDV of a sharp but unknown vignette. Philadelphia: J. This "Gwinn," however, does not resemble the published likeness of Lieutenant Commander William Gwin, mortally wounded at Haines Bluff on December 27, 1862 while in command of the USS Benton. That William Gwin was: midshipman 4/7/47, passed midshipman 6/19/53, master 9/15/55, lieutenant 9/16/55, lieutenant commander 7/16/62, died of Wounds 1/3/63. Unable to verify with certainty an alternate identification. [With:] CDV with a sharp view of a master (1862 Regulations). Uncredited, n.d. Identified on verso in modern pencil, "James M. Holmes." Identification confirmed by another view of same officer in Cohen Collection. James M. Holmes: acting ensign 12/17/62, acting master 7/21/64, discharged 9/16/65.
