Hill enlisted on 8/9/62 as a 1st lieut. 8/23/62 commissioned into Co. I of the 21st IA Infantry. Promoted to Chaplain on 8/4/1863. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his skillful and brave management, capturing three enemy pickets at Champion's Hill, MS on 5/16/1863.
