This moving image depicts a Union soldier carring a flag adorned with the banner “Freedom to the Slave.” Around him are images of slaves being freed, with one tearing a Confederate flag and another putting down his plowshare. In the background a regiment of USCT are marching. Following the Emancipation Proclamation, the Bureau of Colored Troops was formed within the War Department. It seems likely that this rare circular was published by them. Many cities, including Philadelphia, had committees for recruiting colored regiments who likely disseminated the handbills. This copy a variant with the lyrics to John Brown’s Song (aka “Glory, Glory, hallelujah!”) on verso.
