It has been suggested that the subject may be a female soldier, but the lack of identification makes this difficult to confirm. Housed in full, pressed paper case; ninth plate ruby ambrotype of a young soldier, his cheeks lightly tinted pink, posed with a saxhorn. Housed in half, pressed paper case. Accompanied by 2 uncased sixth plate tintypes, each showing who appears to be the same young private. The first presents the subject seated in a studio setting, holding a Smith & Wesson Model No. 2 Army revolver in one hand and a cap in the other, with infantry bugle insignia and "K" partially visible atop the cap. The soldier also wears a large knapsack over his back. In the second view, the private stands, looking directly at the camera, with the same Smith & Wesson No. 2 Army tucked in his belt. Condition: Tintype of seated private a bit dark, but details still visible. Second tintype of same private with some surface cracking, few spots, image a bit more faint. Damage to lower left half of ambrotype of drummer, light scattered spots on other half of plate; case reinforced at spine, some wear to case. Ninth plate ambrotype has very fine clarity, slightly darker area along top edge; wear to half case.
