Beschreibung:

2 1/4 x 3 1/2 in. CDV on cardstock mount (toning and spotting throughout, with light corner/edge wear). Brady's name printed in the negative and on applied paper label on verso. Subject identified in pencil on verso, with additional pencil inscription reading, "He has too much gab[?]" on verso. Subject wears epaulettes, belt, sash, and 4 gold lace squares on each sleeve indicative of his rank, and holds a sword in one hand. His plumed cap rests on the studio pillar beside him. William Worthington Russell (1821-1862) was notably involved in the capture of John Brown at Harpers Ferry in October of 1859. When Brown declined J.E.B. Stuart's demand for surrender, Stuart signaled for his men to force entry into the engine house Brown and his hostages were occupying. First Lieutenant Israel Greene and Major Russell were the first to enter through the breached doorway, and Brown was apprehended shortly thereafter.
