Farrar, Beauvoir [near Biloxi, Mississippi], 15 October 1883. 2 pages, 8vo, integral blank . "THE SOUTHERN VIEW OF THE CONSTITUTION...." Two years after the publication of his exhaustive justification of the southern position on state's rights, The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government (1881), Davis reports on an article he has encountered which is uncharacteristically favorable to the South; he asks whether it can be reprinted: "I send to you by this mail the 'American Register' of the 6th inst. The leading article is marked to secure your attention, & if you should think as well of it as I do, would suggest that if you could have it republished in one of your City papers, it might be useful, or if not, the compliment might be no more than is due to an advocate who if he hoped to gain anything by volunteering for our defense, has been unobservant of the fate of Northern newspapers which have taken the Southern view of the Constitution and of the reserved powers of the States. The 'Day Book' defied Northern prejudice, and died for the want of Southern support." Farrar (1849-1922) a New Orleans attorney, helped found Tulane University and played a role in the leislature and politics. His wife, Lucinda Davis Stamps, was a great niece of Jefferson Davis.
