Two sets of papers, one for Charles Watson Co. H, 53rd OH Vol. Infy., and one for John Bantz, Co. K, 81st PA Vol. Infy. Both were discharged for disability. Charles Watson enlisted in Captain Lasley's company, mustered in at Camp Diamond Jackson as the 53rd Ohio in October 1861. He was discharged in Jan. 1863 at Camp Banks, Alexandria, VA. The 53rd joined Sherman in Paducah, KY, and fought in April at Shiloh. It remained at Shiloh for most of April then joined the siege of Corinth. The following year, it was engaged in the vicinity of Vicksburg, then it went to Tennessee and fought at Missionary Ridge. In Jan., most of the regiment re-enlisted, but at this point, Charles Watson went home. The rest of the unit went with Sherman to Savannah. Of some interest, Watson's papers indicate that he had received no pay since enlistment, only a small clothing allowance. John Bantz was a German-born resident of the mining town of Eckley, Luzerne Co., PA. He enlisted in Capt. Foster's Co. K, the 81st PA as a 35-year-old laborer in September 1861. The unit headed for Washington, spending most of the winter scouting. The following spring they were engaged in the Peninsular Campaign, losing its colonel, James Miller at Fair Oaks, and, shortly after, its Lt. Col., Eli Conner, at Malvern Hill. It fought at South Mountain, Antietam (losing a Captain and Lieut.) and Fredericksburg. It was engaged in most of the other battles of the East the following year - Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Mine Run. In Jan. 1864 a portion of the unit veteranized, and was back in the thick of battle for the spring campaign (Wilderness, Po River, Spottsylvania, North Anna R., Totopotomy, Cold Harbor, Deep Bottom, for a beginning). Bantz was discharged in Jan. of 1862 at Alexandria, VA. He was due pay for four months. Condition: Watson - one section of first page separated; tape on verso of second page at folds. Some scuffing of edges. Bantz - some toning of folds, second page trimmed; two pages glued together (in 1862). Minor edge scuffing.
