Forrest, Memphis, Tenn., 25 December 1865. 1½ pages, 4to, on Memphis and Charleston Rail Road stationery, loss along left edge repaired, catching four words . "Since the arrest of Capt. Semmes [captain of the CSA Alabama ]," Tate writes, "I have been thinking a good deal about who they might arrest next and my mind instinctively turned to you, and I have been uneasy." He promises to go to Washington "and see what is going to be done" and cautions Forrest to "be on the safe side. If you go abroad it will only be for a short time I hope, and whatever may be necessary for your comfort that is in my power shall be done..." -- MAURY, Dabney H. Autograph letter signed ("Dabney H. Maury") to General N. B. Forrest, Memphis, 25 December 1865. 2½ pages, 4to, losses along edges repaired, catching just a few words, spotting . In his letter, sent along with Tate's on the same date, Maury warns Forrest that it seems "certain that the Radicals have selected [Semmes] as the precedent which they will establish to show that none of those who have borne important parts in the war will be secured by their paroles...I think we have everything to fear from the dominant party. And rather than continue within reach of their power I would go abroad did my means enable me to do so...and such things progress so rapidly that it may not be long before even Gen. Lee may be brought to answer on account of his military acts in behalf of the Confederacy..." (2)
