Lot of 19 Civil War hand-colored songsters by Magnus. Each features a full color lithograph of either patriotic scenes or images related to the song title. Song titles include: Tramp! Tramp! Tramp! The Prisoner's Hope; Mother Dear, I'm Thinking of You; The Boy Lay on the Battle-plain; Taking up Quarters; Marching Along; The Drummer of Antietam; The Battle Cry of Freedom; Columbia the Home of the World; The Flag of Our Our Union; Grafted Into the Army; The Bill-Posters Dream or Cross Readings; The Captain of the Provost; The Peanut Stand; The Pennsylvanian Volunteers; The Captain of the Provost; The Soldier's Goodbye to his Lady Love; The Rally Cry of Freedom; The Battle of Cedar Creek; and a lithograph titled The Presidents of Our Great Republic in black and white, which features the oval portraits of all the U.S. Presidents until Lincoln. Charles Magnus was a New York print publisher, map dealer, bookseller and stationer from 1850 to 1899. He copied much of his work from other printmakers by altering or combining design elements from several sources without crediting the original artists. During the Civil War, he produced approximately 700 patriotic envelopes and over 300 illustrated song sheets that soldiers and civilians collected. Condition: Excellent
