Claes Bergoijsbefore 1650 - 1668 AmsterdamA 'pronk' still life with a lobster, bread, lemons, grapes and apricots alongside a gilt cup, tazza and an imported Chinese dish and jar
signed lower left: C. Bergoijs 1665oil on canvasunframed: 84.2 x 121.4 cm.; 33⅛ x 47¾ in.framed: 110.8 x 147.5 cm.; 43⅝ x 58 in.Condition reportThe canvas is lined and the paint surface is flat and stable. The entire surface is covered in a thin layer of modern varnish which is clear. There is evidence of well preserved impasto found throughout, including in areas of the still life including the fruit, lobster, glass and tazza. There is some evidence of abrasion visible in the gilt cup and darks, however, these are not distracting. There are some very minor surface scratches in the brown carpet. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows that the majority of the surface is covered in a reflective layer of old varnish. There is retouching visible in the centre of the canvas, particularly in a vertical line measuring approximately 10 cm high, and in teh darks of the casket in the background. There is also subtle retouching found throughout, located particularly in the carpet and on the stone ledge under the lobster and in small areas of the background. The painting presents very well and is in good condition. The work is offered in a frame.
