View of London from the Adelphi, forming part of the Panorama of the Thames from London to Richmond].
London: Samuel Leigh, [no date, but watermarked 1829]. Small 4to, 1p. letterpress explanation mounted on front pastedown (as called for). Folding hand-coloured aquatint continuous strip panorama (238 x 1714 mm.), on three joined sheets, by John Clark. Original green cloth covers, letterpress title with border of typographic ornaments, printed in brown and blue, mounted on upper cover, later morocco-backed slip-case. Condition : neat repairs to some folds; ties lacking from cloth covers. a fascinating and beautiful view of central london, when the thames was a major artery for trade, st.paul's cathedral dominated the skyline and the disastrous fire which destroyed the original houses of parliament. There is some debate as to who executed this stunning print. There is no reference which identifies the author of this view, but there is some indication that it is the work of the celebrated painter John Heaviside Clark (1770-1863). Born in Scotland, Clark exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy between 1801 and 1832. He was primarily a landscape and marine painter, but he also produced a number of fine aquatints, which exhibit his exceptional talents as an engraver. Known as "Waterloo Clark" for his early sketches of the battle of Waterloo, he was a painter of some repute across the British Isles, and his beautiful views remain some of the most attractive images of the English scene. Rare separate issue of the panorama from the Adelphi (priced at "6s. plain, or 12s coloured."), Abbey details an issue, priced at 28s. plain or 56s. colored, which also includes the London to Richmond panorama. The present work, complete in itself , is not mentioned by Abbey. According to the text page on the front pastedown, the view "was taken from the upper part of a house near the Adelphi, a situation which presents a greater portion of interesting objects than any other spot in the Metropolis." The text then proceeds to list the sights of interest, right to left. Cf. Abbey Life 494 (issue including London to Richmond panorama); Prideaux p.270.
