CLARK, William. Ten Views in the Island of Antigua . London: Thomas Clay, 1823. Oblong 2° (322 x 472mm). 10 hand-coloured aquatints, on Whatman paper, 4 plates watermarked '1819'. (Occasional marginal spotting or surface soiling, just touching sky area of one image, two small neat marginal tears.) Contemporary red half morocco, gilt, with marbled paper boards, upper cover with gilt brown morocco lettering piece (some scuffing to spine). Provenance : R. Lionel Foster (ownership inscription). FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARE WORK ON ANTIGUA, with beautifully-coloured plates. Clark spent three years in the West Indies 'upon the estates of Admiral Tallemach'. In Antigua he made drawings of 'the process of sugar making', showing laborers on a number of estates, 'in the field, boiling-house and distillery'. The unsigned plates accord with those in Abbey, marked 'proof'. Abbey Travel 690; Tooley 147; Cundall, Bibliography of the West Indies 222.
