CLEMENS, SAMUEL L. ("Mark Twain"). Autograph letter signed ("Sam") to Joseph Goodman, a personal friend and reporter on the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise , "Bryn Mawr College," 4 October 1890. 1 page, 8vo, left margin very slightly worn , otherwise in good condition. MARK TWAIN AT BRYN MAWR: "IT IS BY FAR THE BEST FEMALE COLLEGE IN THE WORLD" Clemens to an old friend from his California gold-camp days: "I am mighty sorry you have had to go on working instead of retiring to the seaside for the long rest you were anticipating. Here, things are going along as usual. I am just back from Washington. Jones seems quite well satisfied, & evidently expects to make our scheme go. He will leave for California pretty soon, now, & will be ready to boom(?) the machine as soon as his canvass is off his hands. Susy entered this college as a freshman three or four years ago. It is by long odds the best female college in the world..." Olivia Susan Clemens ("Susy"), the eldest of Twain's three daughters, died of meningitis in 1896 at 24 years of age.
