CLEMENS, Samuel Langhorne (1835-1910)]. TWAIN, Mark. Extract from Captain Stormfield's Visit to Heaven . New York and London: Harper and Brothers, 1909. 8° (201 x 128mm). Frontispiece by Albert Levering (A little spotting, mainly on the two end pages, a few minor soil marks, generally clean and crisp.) Original red pictorial cloth lettered in white (corners slightly bumped). Provenance : William Wymark Jacobs (front pastedown inscribed: "To W.W. Jacobs with compliments Mark Twain October 1909"; bookplate).

Clemens's story, originally printed in Harper's Magazine , December 1907 and January 1908, had been written many years before but was considered too shocking to publish. Johnson pp. 91-92.
