CLEMENS, SAMUEL LANGHORNE. Autograph letter signed ("S.L. Clemens") to "Dear C & W" (his English publishers Chatto & Windus), [Vienna], Hotel Metropole, 23 October 1897. 2 pages, 8vo, on black-bordered mourning stationery, some very slight soiling . Requesting that copies of More Tramps Abroad [the English title for Following the Equator ] be sent out: "When the book is ready won't you please send an early copy (for review) to..." Clemens here gives the names and addresses of 15 recipients, including Bram Stoker (whose Dracula was published earlier in the year), Robert Barr, S.R. Crockett, and various friends. Clemens's closing sounds like a mad bit of nonsense German: "...Ihr ergebensterhochwohlgeborenergeehrterhochachtungsvoller." But it is just German words jokingly run together as one and roughly translates: "Your obedient servant, right honorable sir, dear sir, most respectful," followed by Clemens's signature.
