COBENZL, Johann Karl Philipp, Graf von (1712-1770) -- Joseph ERMENS (1736-1805). Ermens. Brussels: H. Vleminckx, 10 June 1771. 8 o (162 x 100 mm). Contemporary half calf, spine gilt (a little worn). PRICED in a contemporary hand. The owner of this "rich library of precious rare works from all branches of science" (Wurzbach), was the Austrian statesman Cobenzl who, from 1753 to his death, administered the Austrian Netherlands on behalf of Empress Maria Theresa. He also founded the Academy of Science in Brussels. The catalogue was compiled by Joseph Ermens, the Belgian bibliographer (see Hoefer), who added interesting comments to a number of items. The library was particularly strong in German, Austrian, and Netherlandish law and history, including, in its bibliographical section, an unusual group of Indices Expurgatorii, annotated by Ermens.
