Coin Silver Civil War American Watch Company Pocket Watch and Chain Identified to Major Elial F. Carpenter, 49th and 112th New York Volunteer Infantry, c. 1862, American Waltham Watch Co. "Wm. Ellery" coin silver hunter-case watch, roman numeral porcelain dial with blued spade hands and running seconds at 6, key-wind, key-set movement marked "Wm. Ellery/Boston, Mass./42995," engraved on the obverse "Killed/May 12th/1864" in a shield surrounded by foliate designs, engraved on the reverse "Lieut. E.F. Carpenter/Jamestown/N.Y.," with a silver chain, dia. 2 1/4 in. Provenance: The collection of Ron Tunison. Note: Carpenter enlisted as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 49th New York Infantry on September 18, 1861, and was promoted and transferred to the 112th New York Infantry on September 19, 1863. He was mortally wounded at Drewry's Bluff, Virginia, on May 16, 1864, and died two days later.
