Coleridge's last major work was undertaken as a form of spiritual guidebook for the young, based on the sermons and meditations of Archbishop Leighton, the 17th-century divine whose work he had first read in the years 1813-14. But, having started as little more than an anthology -- 'The Beauties of Archbishop Leighton,' it developed over three years into one of his 'most dramatic and influential productions, which found an astonishing range of readers, from the philosopher J.S. Mill to the sublime poet of the Victorian nonsense-world, Lewis Carroll' (Holmes, Coleridge Darker Reflections , p. 525). Coleridge's corrections to this copy follow the printed errata in 22 instances (only the errata to pp. 15, 69 and 74 are omitted). There is one additional correction, the erasure of the second sentence on p. 194 ('Thus in the Text, Love your Neighbour as yourself, Neighbour in our New, and stranger in our Old Testament represent one and the same Hebrew word'), with the appended note 'Vide -- Corrections and Amendments.'
