According to one of several handwritten labels on the backboard, the engraving was acquired from A. Fraser & Co., Union Street, Inverness, Scotland (perhaps by Colonel D. K. McLeod, whose name is on two of the labels).

One of the most famous portrayals of the interaction between Indians and the British. Johann Zoffany arrived in Calcutta in September 1783 and was rapidly accepted by British society there, painting many of their portraits, including that of the Governor-General, Warren Hastings. Hastings, together with leading Indian and European members of Lucknow society, attended the Cock Match organised in April 1784 by Colonel John Mordaunt (standing, in white, slightly to the left of centre), Commander of the Nawab Asaf-ud-daula's Bodyguard, and a favourite at his court. Other well-known figures who appear include the Frenchman Claude Martin, the painter Ozias Humphry, and the East India Company officer, John Wombwell - as well as Zoffany himself. Cock-fighting was a popular sport in Lucknow and with the British, and this scene is one of Zoffany's vivid depictions of Indian life, which were then popularised by Earlom's prints, each with accompanying keyplates. Zoffany appears to have painted two versions of this event, one for the Nawab (now lost) and one for Hastings (referred to as the 'Daylesford version'), after which Earlom made his copy.
According to a handwritten note on the backboard of the reproduction key, it was presented to a previous owner by an official of La Martiniere College, Lucknow.
