.36 Thuer caliber, 7.5" barrel, S/N 14181 (mfg. ca 1863). Blued and color casehardened finish, brass triggerguard and backstrap, ivory grip. Matching numbers throughout, including wedge, with the exception of the grip, which is unnumbered. Standard one-line New York barrel address, conversion ring marked in two lines: PAT. SEP./15, 1868 and with a script E for the ejection position. Cylinder with standard patent markings and remnants of naval engagement roll scene, frame with usual two-line Colt's Patent mark, rear web of triggerguard marked "36 CAL." The Thuer conversion was the first metallic cartridge revolver variant to be produced by Colt, with about 5,000 guns of all models altered ca 1869-1872. A scarce and desirable example of one of Colt's first cartridge revolvers. Condition: Good. Retains no finish with a smoky gray patina and scattered light surface oxidation. Markings mostly clear, cylinder scene worn and only partly visible. Mechanically functional, fair bore with moderate pitting along its entire length. Brass with a nice, uncleaned patina. Ivory grip shows good age and is almost certainly 19th century, but does not appear to be factory original.
