Title: Colton's General Atlas, Containing One Hundred and Seventy Steel Plate Maps and Plans, on One Hundred Imperial Folio Sheets...accompanied by Descriptions, Geographical, Statistical, and Historical by Richard S. Fisher, M.D. Author: Colton, J.H. Place: New York Publisher: Johnson and Browning Date: 1859 Description: Complete, with 102 pages of lithographed maps and plans, all but a few hand-colored, 6 are double-page (counting as two numbers), many with insets; hand-colored double-page plate of comparative mountains and rivers of the world; steel-engraved frontispiece. (folio) 17½x14¾, original quarter brown and tan cloth, lettered in gilt. The scarce 1859 edition of Colton's General Atlas, with maps of the various states and regions of the U.S. and the rest of the world. Among the more remarkable maps in this edition is "Colton's Territories of New Mexico and Utah," which has Utah, New Mexico and Arizona parallel to each other, in that order, with Arizona named but only in ghost-like letters, all three stretching westward to the California border. There is a large, double-page map of Texas, an interesting map of the northwest with Washington what was later Idaho and portions of Montana, and many other interesting configurations and features as the American West was gradually forming itself into its present familiar states. Phillips Atlases 827 (citing 1858 edition). Lot Amendments Condition: Covers detached (but present), spine mostly missing, edge wear, rubbing; front free endpaper and frontispiece loosely laid in, foxing, occasional minor stains; maps very good with bright original hand-coloring; binding somewhat worn and in need of repair. Item number: 144298
